Gynecomastia is a male-specific condition in which an imbalance of estrogen can cause the excessive growth of breast tissue. The condition can be caused by a number of factors and can happen essentially at any age, potentially causing a lack of self-confidence in those it afflicts. If you are a male and currently suffering from excessive breast tissue, consider a consultation at Gary J. Rosenbaum, M.D., P.A. Plastic Surgery in Miami Beach, FL. Our board-certified plastic surgeon, Dr. Gary Rosenbaum, is experienced in the surgical treatment of gynecomastia. This procedure involves the removal of the excess breast tissue, much like a breast reduction, to reveal a small, more proportionate shape.
Since excess breast tissue can be caused by medical conditions other than gynecomastia, a doctor should confirm the cause before treatment. Ideal candidates will have:
- A healthy body weight
- Fat and breast tissue that is resistant to diet and exercise
- Good skin elasticity
- Overall good health

"Still me, only younger! My main fear when I considered a lower facelift was not looking like myself after surgery. But while the surgery did change how I looked in terms of how old I looked, I was tremendously happy with how natural and refreshed my face looked. My skin is more taught, the sagginess in my neck is gone and the jowls are gone. Dr. Rosenbaum far exceeded my expectations in skill and professionalism. I am very happy with the results. I look 15 years younger. Thank you Dr. Rosenbaum!"- G. / Healthgrades / Feb 07, 2019
What to Expect
Male breast reduction surgery usually involves a combination of surgical tissue removal and liposuction. Dr. Rosenbaum will make an incision (usually around the areola) and remove dense breast tissue with surgical excisions. Then Dr. Rosenbaum can remove any excess fat with liposuction to create a smooth contour. After the surgery, patients will have their chest bandaged and in a compression garment that should be worn at all times. Patients should rest and move their upper body as little as possible for at least three days. Most patients can return to work in 7 – 10 days and resume low impact exercise in 2 – 3 weeks. Dr. Rosenbaum will go over specific recovery instructions and any prescribed medication.
Results from male breast reduction are usually seen at least three months after the surgery when the swelling has subsided. It may take 6 – 12 months for the skin to tighten and form to the new chest shape. The results of male breast reduction surgery will be permanent as long as the patient maintains a healthy, stable weight, but natural signs of aging (like loose skin) will continue.
